Amazon selling fees
How much does Amazon take in 2026?
Amazon takes a referral fee of 15% in most categories, charged on the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. That is only the first layer. If Amazon ships the order for you (FBA), a fulfillment fee is added per unit, and the Individual plan adds $0.99 per item. Media items pay a $1.80 closing fee on top. Put together, Amazon usually keeps 25% to 40% of a typical FBA sale, and more on cheap items where the fixed fees weigh heavily.
| Fee | Amount | Charged on | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | 8%–45% (15% most categories) | Item + shipping + gift wrap | Every sale |
| Minimum referral fee | $0.30 per item | When the % fee is lower | Most categories |
| Closing fee | $1.80 per item | Each unit sold | Media categories |
| Individual plan | $0.99 per item | Each unit sold | Individual sellers |
| Professional plan | $39.99 per month | Subscription | Professional sellers |
| FBA fulfillment fee | From $2.43 per unit | Size, weight and price | FBA orders |
| Fuel & logistics surcharge | 3.5% | The FBA fulfillment fee | FBA orders |
| Monthly storage | $0.78–$2.40 per cu ft | Space your stock uses | FBA inventory |
There is no listing fee on Amazon and no separate payment processing fee: card processing is built into the referral fee. Sales tax is added at checkout, collected by Amazon and sent to the state, so it never shows up in your payout or in your fees.

Two kinds of tiers: whole price vs portion
Tiered categories work in one of two very different ways, and it changes how you should price:
- Whole-price tiers (beauty, baby, grocery, clothing, lawn mowers): one rate applies to the entire price. A beauty item at $10.00 pays 8% ($0.80), but at $11.00 it pays 15% on all of it ($1.65). Pricing a few cents under the line can leave you with more money.
- Portion tiers (jewelry, watches, furniture, electronics accessories, compact appliances): the higher rate only covers the first slice of the price. A $300 ring pays 20% on the first $250 and 5% on the remaining $50, so $52.50 in total.
Check the line before you set a price
Clothing is the sharpest example: 10% up to $20, then 17% on the whole price. A $20.00 shirt pays $2.00, while a $21.00 shirt pays $3.57 and nets less. The calculator flags these thresholds, and the target-profit mode finds the cheaper side of the line for you.
Individual vs Professional selling plan
Amazon has two selling plans. The Individual plan has no monthly fee and charges $0.99 for every item sold. The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month and removes the per-item fee. Referral, closing and FBA fees are the same on both.
The maths is simple: $39.99 ÷ $0.99 is just over 40, so Professional is cheaper from 41 sales a month. Below that, Individual costs less in fees, but Professional also unlocks the Buy Box, Sponsored Products ads, bulk listing tools, business reports and restricted categories, which is why most serious sellers pick it early. In the calculator, enter your monthly sales on the Professional plan to spread the subscription across each sale.
Amazon FBA fulfillment fees
With Fulfillment by Amazon, you send stock to Amazon's warehouses and Amazon picks, packs, ships and handles customer service and returns. The fulfillment fee covers that work and depends on three things: the size tier, the shipping weight and the price of the item.
Small standard (up to 15 × 12 × 0.75 in and 1 lb)
| Shipping weight | Under $10 | $10–$50 | Over $50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 oz or less | $2.43 | $3.32 | $3.58 |
| 2+ to 4 oz | $2.49 | $3.42 | $3.68 |
| 4+ to 6 oz | $2.56 | $3.45 | $3.71 |
| 6+ to 8 oz | $2.66 | $3.54 | $3.80 |
| 8+ to 10 oz | $2.77 | $3.68 | $3.94 |
| 10+ to 12 oz | $2.82 | $3.78 | $4.04 |
| 12+ to 14 oz | $2.92 | $3.91 | $4.17 |
| 14+ to 16 oz | $2.95 | $3.96 | $4.22 |
Large standard (up to 18 × 14 × 8 in and 20 lb)
| Shipping weight | Under $10 | $10–$50 | Over $50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 oz or less | $2.91 | $3.73 | $3.99 |
| 4+ to 8 oz | $3.13 | $3.95 | $4.21 |
| 8+ to 12 oz | $3.38 | $4.20 | $4.46 |
| 12+ to 16 oz | $3.78 | $4.60 | $4.86 |
| 1+ to 1.25 lb | $4.22 | $5.04 | $5.30 |
| 1.25+ to 1.5 lb | $4.60 | $5.42 | $5.68 |
| 1.5+ to 1.75 lb | $4.75 | $5.57 | $5.83 |
| 1.75+ to 2 lb | $5.00 | $5.82 | $6.08 |
| 2+ to 2.25 lb | $5.10 | $5.92 | $6.18 |
| 2.25+ to 2.5 lb | $5.28 | $6.10 | $6.36 |
| 2.5+ to 2.75 lb | $5.44 | $6.26 | $6.52 |
| 2.75+ to 3 lb | $5.85 | $6.67 | $6.93 |
| 3+ to 20 lb | $6.15 + $0.08 per 4 oz over 3 lb | $6.97 + $0.08 per 4 oz over 3 lb | $7.23 + $0.08 per 4 oz over 3 lb |
For large standard items, Amazon bills the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight (length × width × height in inches ÷ 139), so a light but bulky box can cost more than its weight suggests. Small standard items are billed on unit weight. The "under $10" column is Amazon's low-price FBA rate, which applies automatically.
The 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge
Amazon currently adds 3.5% to every FBA fulfillment fee. It is charged on the fee, not on your price, so a $4.20 fulfillment fee becomes $4.35. The calculator includes it by default; switch it off if Amazon removes it.
Bulky items, apparel and peak season
Items over 20 lb or larger than large standard fall into bulky and extra-large tiers with much higher fees, apparel can be billed on its own rate, and a holiday peak surcharge applies for part of the fourth quarter. For any of these, copy the fee from Amazon's Revenue Calculator or your fee preview into the calculator's "Enter my fee" option.
FBA vs FBM: which costs less?
The referral fee is identical either way. What changes is who ships and who pays for it:
| FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) | FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) | |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | On the item price | On item price + shipping charged |
| Shipping | Fulfillment fee + 3.5% surcharge | Your own label cost |
| Storage | Monthly, per cubic foot | Your own space |
| Prime badge | Yes | Only with Seller Fulfilled Prime |
| Customer service and returns | Handled by Amazon | Handled by you |
FBA usually wins for small, light, fast-selling products: the fulfillment fee is often lower than a retail label, and the Prime badge lifts conversion. FBM tends to win for heavy or oversized items, slow sellers that would rack up storage fees, and one-off or used items. Run the same item through both modes in the calculator and compare what you receive.
How to calculate Amazon fees by hand
The calculator does this for you, but the steps are worth knowing:
- Add the item price and any shipping the buyer pays (FBA orders have no separate shipping charge). This is the total sales price.
- Apply your category's referral rate to that total, and use the per-item minimum if the result is lower. Media items add a $1.80 closing fee.
- Add your plan cost: $0.99 per item on the Individual plan, or your share of the $39.99 monthly Professional subscription.
- For FBA, add the fulfillment fee for the size tier, shipping weight and price band, plus the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge. For FBM, add your shipping label instead.
- Subtract everything from the total sales price to get your payout, then subtract your item and other costs to get your profit.
As formulas: referral = max(rate × (price + shipping charged), minimum), payout = price + shipping charged − referral − closing − plan − FBA fee × 1.035 − label and profit = payout − item cost − other costs.
Working backwards from a profit target is harder by hand, because the referral rate and the FBA price band both move with the price. The "Price for a target profit" tab searches every cent and returns the lowest price that reaches your target.

Fixed fees hit cheap items hardest
On the $25 item Amazon keeps 32% of the sale; on the $8 item it keeps 40%, even with the lower 8% referral rate and the low-price FBA fee. If the $25 item cost you $8, your profit is $8.90 before storage, inbound shipping and ads.
Other Amazon fees to know about
- Refund administration fee: when you refund a buyer, Amazon returns the referral fee minus 20% of it, capped at $5.00. On a $3.75 referral fee you lose $0.75.
- Monthly storage: $0.78 per cubic foot for standard-size stock for most of the year and $2.40 in the fourth-quarter holiday months (oversize $0.56 and $1.40). Stock that sits for many months adds aged-inventory surcharges.
- Inbound placement fee: a per-unit charge for sending FBA stock in, lower when you split shipments across several warehouses yourself.
- Low-inventory-level fee: charged when a fast-selling FBA item runs below about four weeks of supply. New and slow-moving items are exempt.
- Returns processing fee: applies to products whose return rate is above the threshold for their category, most often clothing and shoes.
- Advertising:Sponsored Products ads are optional but common. Add your ad spend per unit to "Other costs" to see the real profit.
Storage and inbound placement depend on your product and sell-through, so the calculator has an optional per-unit field for them on the FBA side.
Amazon fees vs eBay, Walmart and other marketplaces
Amazon's headline 15% is similar to Walmart and eBay, but FBA and storage put the full cost higher for most sellers. Resale apps charge less, though their buyers are looking for different things:
| Marketplace | Headline seller fee | Calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 15% referral (most categories) + FBA or shipping | You are here |
| eBay | 13.6% + $0.30–$0.40 per order for most categories | eBay fee calculator |
| Walmart | 15% referral (most categories), no monthly fee | Walmart fee calculator |
| Shopify | Monthly plan + card processing | Shopify fee calculator |
| Etsy | $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + processing | Etsy fee calculator |
| Mercari | 10% of item price + shipping | Mercari fee calculator |
| Poshmark | $2.95 under $15, 20% from $15 | Poshmark fee calculator |
| Depop | No selling fee in the US & UK, payment processing only | Depop fee calculator |
| Whatnot | 8% commission + 2.9% + $0.30 processing for new sellers | Whatnot fee calculator |
Amazon is built for new, branded and replenishable products with a barcode, while resale marketplaces suit used, vintage and one-of-a-kind items. Many sellers use both: Amazon for steady catalog items and resale apps for everything else.
Tips to keep more of each Amazon sale
- Price around the tiers. In whole-price categories, a total just under $10, $15 or $20 can pay half the referral rate.
- Shrink the package. Dropping from large standard to small standard, or under a weight band, cuts the fulfillment fee on every unit.
- Mind the $10 and $50 lines. FBA fees step up at both, so a price just over the line can cost more in fees than it earns.
- Switch plans at 41 sales a month. Past that, Professional is cheaper than $0.99 per item.
- Keep stock moving. Send inventory in smaller, more frequent batches to limit storage and avoid aged-inventory surcharges, while keeping enough on hand to stay clear of the low-inventory fee.
- Use FBM for heavy and slow items. When your label costs less than the FBA fee plus storage, ship it yourself.
FAQ
Amazon fees: frequently asked questions (2026)
How much does Amazon take per sale?
Most categories pay a 15% referral fee on the item price plus any shipping charged. FBA sellers also pay a fulfillment fee that starts around $2.43 for tiny, low-priced items and is $3.32 to $6.97 for most standard-size items, plus a 3.5% surcharge on that fee. Add $0.99 per item on the Individual plan. On a typical $25 FBA sale Amazon keeps roughly a third.
What is the Amazon referral fee?
It is the commission Amazon charges on every sale, set by category. Most categories pay 15%, electronics and computers pay 8%, and a few pay more, such as 17% for clothing over $20 and 45% for Amazon device accessories. Most categories also have a $0.30 minimum per item.
Does Amazon charge referral fees on shipping and sales tax?
Shipping yes, sales tax no. The referral fee is charged on the total sales price, which includes the item price, any shipping the buyer pays and gift wrap. Sales tax is collected and sent to the state by Amazon and is not part of the fee base.
How much are Amazon FBA fees?
The FBA fulfillment fee depends on the size tier, the shipping weight and the price. A small standard item under 2 oz costs $2.43 under $10, $3.32 from $10 to $50 and $3.58 over $50. A 1 lb large standard item priced $10 to $50 costs $4.60. Items over 3 lb add $0.08 for every extra 4 oz, and Amazon adds a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to the fee.
What is the Amazon FBA fuel and logistics surcharge?
Amazon adds 3.5% to every FBA fulfillment fee in the US. It is charged on the fulfillment fee, not on your sale price, so on a $4.20 fee it adds about $0.15. Amazon describes it as temporary but has not set an end date.
Is the Individual or Professional plan cheaper?
Individual costs $0.99 per item sold with no monthly fee. Professional costs $39.99 a month with no per-item fee. Professional is cheaper from 41 sales a month and also unlocks the Buy Box, ads, bulk tools and more categories.
What is the Amazon closing fee?
A flat $1.80 per item sold in media categories: books, music, DVDs and video, software, video games and accessories, and video game consoles. It is charged on top of the referral fee on both selling plans.
What is the minimum referral fee on Amazon?
Most categories charge at least $0.30 per item, so the minimum applies whenever the percentage fee would be lower, which happens below $2 at 15%. Media, video games, consoles and grocery have no minimum.
Is FBA or FBM cheaper on Amazon?
The referral fee is the same either way. FBA adds a fulfillment fee and storage but saves you the shipping label, packing time and customer service, and qualifies for Prime. FBM is often cheaper for heavy, slow-selling or high-priced items. Compare your label cost with the FBA fee in the calculator.
Does Amazon refund its fees when I refund a buyer?
Partly. Amazon refunds the referral fee but keeps a refund administration fee of 20% of that referral fee, capped at $5. FBA fulfillment fees are not refunded, and some categories with high return rates also pay a returns processing fee.
How much does Amazon FBA storage cost?
Standard-size inventory costs $0.78 per cubic foot per month for most of the year and $2.40 in the fourth-quarter holiday months. Oversize items cost $0.56 and $1.40. Inventory that sits for a long time also pays aged-inventory surcharges.
Can I use this Amazon fee calculator without an ASIN?
Yes. Enter a price, pick the category, size tier and weight, and the calculator works out every fee without an ASIN, an account or a browser extension. For bulky items or apparel, paste the fulfillment fee from Amazon's Revenue Calculator into the custom fee field.
Is the calculator accurate for every product?
It uses Amazon US referral rates for every main category and the standard-size FBA rate card, which covers most items. Peak-season fees, storage, low-inventory and returns fees vary by product, so add them as extra costs when they apply. Amazon may round individual fees differently by a cent.
