Etsy selling fees

How much does Etsy take in 2026?

A US seller pays Etsy a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee, which comes to about 10–11% of the order total. On a $50 item with $8 shipping, Etsy keeps $5.96 and you receive $52.04. If the buyer arrived through one of Etsy's Offsite Ads, another 15% (or 12% for larger shops) comes off, and the total climbs to around 22–25%.

Sellers in the UK and Canada pay a slightly different mix: a higher processing rate in the UK, a regulatory operating fee in both countries, and VAT or GST/HST on the fees themselves. This Etsy fee calculator handles all three markets, and because Etsy sellers are mostly makers, it counts your materials and your time too, so the number at the end is a real profit, not just a payout. Think of it as an Etsy profit calculator as much as a fee calculator.

Etsy selling fees by country

Every Etsy order carries the same three core fees. What changes from country to country is the processing rate, whether a regulatory operating fee applies, and how tax is added to your fees.

Percentages apply to the order total: item price after discounts, plus shipping and gift wrap. Fixed fees in USD are converted at the day's exchange rate.

Listing fee: $0.20, and again on renewal

Publishing a listing costs $0.20 and keeps it live for four months. With auto-renew on, a sale renews the listing and you pay another $0.20. When one buyer orders several of the same item, each extra unit costs $0.20 as well. The fee is set in US dollars, so UK and Canadian shops see it converted at the market rate.

Transaction fee: 6.5% of the whole order

The 6.5% is calculated on the item price plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge. It is not charged on sales tax. This is the biggest single fee on most orders and the one that makes cheap shipping less cheap than it looks.

Payment processing

Processing pays for Etsy Payments and depends on where your bank account is. The percentage is taken from the full amount the buyer pays, including shipping and any sales tax Etsy collects. That is why a US order with 7.25% sales tax pays $2.12 in processing instead of $1.99, even though you never see the tax.

Etsy Offsite Ads explained

Etsy advertises listings on Google, social media and other sites. If a shopper clicks one of those ads and buys from your shop within 30 days, Etsy charges an advertising fee on the whole order, shipping included. You don't set a budget, and you only pay when a sale happens.

  • 15% if your shop has never made $10,000 in a 365-day period. You can opt out in your Shop Manager settings.
  • 12%once your shop has made $10,000 or more in any 365-day period. From then on you can't opt out.
  • Capped at $100 per order, so the fee stops growing above an order total of about $667 at 15% or $833 at 12%.

An Offsite Ads fee is a share of your revenue, not your profit. On the $50 + $8 order above, a 15% ad costs $8.70, which takes total Etsy fees from $5.96 to $14.66. If that item costs you $25 to make, the ad takes almost a third of your $27.04 profit. Pick the 15% or 12% option in the calculator to see your own numbers.

Etsy Ads, the on-site promoted listings you pay for per click, are separate. Add your spend per sale in the calculator if you run them.

How to calculate Etsy fees

The calculator does this live, but the steps are easy to follow on paper:

  1. Add the item price (after any sale or coupon), the shipping you charge and any gift wrap. This is the order total.
  2. Take 6.5% of the order total for the transaction fee and add $0.20 for the listing fee (plus $0.20 for each extra item in the order).
  3. Work out payment processing on the order total including any sales tax: 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK, 3% or 4% + C$0.25 in Canada.
  4. Add the regulatory operating fee (UK 0.48%, Canada 0.50%), Offsite Ads (15% or 12%, up to $100) if the sale came from an ad, and VAT or GST/HST on fees where it applies.
  5. Subtract the fees and your shipping label from the order total to get your payout, then subtract materials, packaging and your time to get your profit.

For a US shop, the formula is fees = $0.20 + 6.5% × order total + 3% × (order total + sales tax) + $0.25. Then payout = order total − fees − label and profit = payout − materials − packaging − your time. Etsy rounds each fee to the cent, so your statement may be a cent off from a spreadsheet that rounds only at the end.

How to price handmade items on Etsy

A payout is not a profit. Before you know what an Etsy sale earns, you need to count what it cost to make, and that includes your time. The calculator's default numbers show why: a $50 item with $8 shipping, $10 of materials, half an hour of work at $20 an hour, $1 of packaging and a $6 label leaves a profit of $25.04, a 43% margin on the order.

Count every cost, including your hours

List materials per item, packaging per order and the postage you actually pay. Then time yourself making a batch and divide by the number of pieces. Pay yourself a real hourly rate: if you leave labour out, a price can look profitable while you work for less than minimum wage. The calculator shows your effective hourly rate once fees and materials are paid.

Price backwards from the profit you want

Because most Etsy fees are percentages of the order, you can solve for the price: order total = (costs + fixed fees + target profit) ÷ (1 − percentage fees). For a US shop the percentages are 6.5% + 3% = 9.5% and the fixed fees are $0.45. With $27 of costs (materials, labour, packaging and label) and a $15 profit target, the order total is $42.45 ÷ 0.905 = $46.91. Take off $8 of shipping and you would list the item at $38.91. The "Price for a target profit" tab does this for any country, including Offsite Ads and VAT or GST/HST on fees.

What is a good profit margin on Etsy?

There is no official figure, but many makers aim for 30–50% of the order total after paying themselves for their time. Lower margins leave little room for a 15% Offsite Ad, a sale or a refund. A classic rule of thumb from craft fairs, (materials + labour) × 2 for wholesale and × 2 again for retail, is a useful sanity check; run the result through the calculator to see what is left after Etsy's cut.

Etsy fees in the UK and Canada

United Kingdom

UK shops pay 4% + £0.20 for processing on every order, wherever the buyer is, plus the 0.48% regulatory operating fee. The bigger difference is VAT: until you add a UK VAT number to your Etsy account, Etsy adds 20% VAT to all seller fees, including Offsite Ads. On a £58 order that turns £6.72 of fees into £8.06. VAT-registered sellers are charged no VAT on fees and account for it themselves under the reverse charge. Only add a VAT number if you are actually registered with HMRC.

Canada

Canadian shops pay 3% + C$0.25 processing when the buyer is in Canada or the US and 4% + C$0.25 for buyers anywhere else, plus a 0.50% regulatory operating fee. GST/HST on fees depends on your registration:

  • Registered:GST/HST (and QST in Quebec) is charged on every seller fee at your province's rate. You can usually claim it back as an input tax credit.
  • Not registered: no tax on the transaction and processing fees of orders where Etsy charged the Canadian buyer GST/HST, but tax still applies to listing, advertising and other fees.

Etsy notes that sellers generally need to register once their sales pass C$30,000. Pick your province and buyer location in the calculator to see the exact amounts. Provincial rates are general Canadian rates, not figures Etsy publishes, so check your own situation with your accountant.

Etsy fees vs eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, Depop and Whatnot

Etsy sits at the cheaper end for typical handmade orders, as long as an Offsite Ad isn't involved. Here is how the headline US fees compare:

Headline seller fees by marketplace (US)
MarketplaceHeadline seller feeCalculator
Etsy$0.20 listing + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25You are here
eBay13.6% + $0.30–$0.40 per order (most categories)eBay fee calculator
Mercari10% of item + shippingMercari fee calculator
Poshmark$2.95 under $15, 20% from $15Poshmark fee calculator
DepopNo selling fee, 3.3% + $0.45 processingDepop fee calculator
WhatnotUp to 8% + 2.9% + $0.30 processingWhatnot fee calculator

Fees are only part of the picture. Etsy brings buyers looking for handmade and vintage pieces, while eBay, Mercari or Whatnot may reach shoppers who would never search Etsy. Listing the same piece in more than one place gives it more chances to sell, and a crosslisting tool like Treecat keeps the copies in sync.

How to lower your Etsy fees

  • Use Share & Save. When a buyer comes through your own shared link, Etsy refunds 4% of the order total.
  • Decide on Offsite Ads deliberately. Under $10,000 a year you can opt out. If you stay in, build the 15% into your prices.
  • Encourage bigger orders. The fixed processing fee is charged once per order, so bundles and multi-item discounts spread it out.
  • List in your bank's currency to avoid the 2.5% conversion fee.
  • Price shipping honestly.Etsy's percentages apply to shipping, so undercharging postage costs you twice. Etsy shipping labels are usually cheaper than buying at the counter.
  • UK sellers: if you are VAT-registered, add your VAT number so Etsy stops adding 20% to your fees.
  • Recheck after fee changes. Run your best sellers through this Etsy earnings calculator whenever Etsy changes its rates.

FAQ

Etsy fees: frequently asked questions (2026)

How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?

For a US seller with no shipping and no ads, $9.95: a $0.20 listing fee, $6.50 transaction fee (6.5%) and $3.25 processing fee (3% + $0.25). You keep $90.05. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add $15 at 15% or $12 at 12%.

What percentage does Etsy take per sale?

Roughly 10–11% of the order total for a US seller before ads: 6.5% transaction plus 3% processing, plus $0.45 in fixed fees. On a $50 item with $8 shipping that is $5.96, or 10.3%. Cheaper items pay a higher share because the fixed fees weigh more. Offsite Ads add 12–15%.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing, the regulatory operating fee and Offsite Ads are all charged on the shipping you charge the buyer, not just the item price.

Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?

Only the payment processing fee. Etsy collects and remits US sales tax for you, but the processing percentage is charged on the total the buyer pays, tax included. The transaction fee and regulatory operating fee exclude tax.

What is Etsy's payment processing fee?

It depends on where your bank account is: 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK, and in Canada 3% + C$0.25 for buyers in Canada or the US or 4% + C$0.25 for buyers elsewhere.

What is the Etsy regulatory operating fee?

A percentage Etsy charges sellers in some countries on item price, shipping and gift wrap. It is 0.48% in the UK and 0.50% in Canada (France 1.14%, Italy 0.80%, Spain 0.88%). US sellers do not pay it.

Do UK sellers pay VAT on Etsy fees?

Yes, unless a UK VAT number is on your Etsy account. Without one, Etsy adds 20% VAT to the listing, transaction, processing, regulatory and advertising fees. On a £50 item with £8 shipping that is £1.34 extra.

Do Canadian sellers pay GST/HST on Etsy fees?

If you're registered for GST/HST, Etsy charges it on all seller fees and you can claim it back as input tax credits. If you're not, it isn't charged on the transaction and processing fees of orders where Etsy already charged the buyer GST/HST, but it is on listing, advertising and other fees.

Are Etsy Offsite Ads mandatory?

Only for shops that have made $10,000 or more in any 365-day period; they pay 12% on attributed orders for good. Smaller shops pay 15% and can opt out in their Shop Manager settings. Either way the fee is capped at $100 per order.

Do I pay the $0.20 listing fee again when an item sells?

With auto-renew on, yes: the sale renews the listing for another $0.20. If a buyer orders several of the same item, you also pay $0.20 for each extra unit.

How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?

Etsy charges a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee that varies by country; it is commonly reported as about $15 in the US. After that you pay $0.20 per listing and the fees on each sale.

Does Etsy charge a currency conversion fee?

Yes, 2.5% of the sale when your listing currency is different from your bank account's currency. Listing in the same currency as your bank account avoids it.

How should I price my handmade items on Etsy?

Add up materials, packaging, postage and your time (hours × an hourly rate), add the profit you want, then divide by one minus Etsy’s percentage fees. The "Price for a target profit" tab does this for you, including fixed fees and taxes on fees.

Is it cheaper to sell on Etsy or eBay?

Before ads, usually Etsy: about 10% of the order in the US against eBay's 13.6% plus a per-order fee in most categories. An Offsite Ads sale can make Etsy the more expensive of the two. Run the same numbers through both calculators to compare.
