Shopify selling fees

How much does Shopify take in 2026?

Shopify takes no commission on your sales. With Shopify Payments, a US store on the Basic plan pays 2.9% + $0.30 per online order, plus a $39 monthly subscription. On a $100 order that is $3.20 in card fees, so you receive $96.80 before your own costs. The subscription is the part most fee calculators leave out: it is a flat cost, so its weight per order depends on how much you sell. At 100 orders a month the Basic plan adds $0.39 to each one; at 10 orders it adds $3.90.

That is why this Shopify fee calculator asks for your monthly orders. It spreads the plan (and, if you want, your apps and theme) across every sale, then shows what you receive, your profit and the plan that would cost least at your volume. It works as a Shopify profit calculator too: add product cost, postage, packaging and ad spend, or switch to the target-profit tab to find the price you need.

Shopify plans and Shopify Payments rates

Every plan gives you the same online store and checkout. What changes is the monthly price, the card rate Shopify Payments charges and the transaction fee if you use another payment provider. Higher plans cost more per month but charge less per order.

Shopify plan prices and US card rates
Plan (US)Per monthOnline card rateIn person3rd-party fee
Basic$39 ($29 yearly)2.9% + $0.302.6% + $0.102%
Grow$105 ($79 yearly)2.7% + $0.302.5% + $0.101%
Advanced$399 ($299 yearly)2.5% + $0.302.4% + $0.100.6%
Plusfrom $2,300from about 2.15% + $0.30Negotiated0.2%
Online rates are for standard domestic cards. Premium cards (Amex, corporate, rewards) cost 0.6 points more on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and cards issued abroad add 1%. Plus rates are negotiated.

Shop Pay, Shopify's one-tap checkout, costs nothing extra: those orders are charged at your normal Shopify Payments rate. Yearly billing knocks about 25% off the Basic, Grow and Advanced subscriptions, which is worth taking once you know the store will run for a year.

Third-party transaction fees and PayPal

If you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of whatever the provider charges: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. The fee is worked out on the products after discounts plus shipping and tax, so it is not only a cut of the item price.

On a $100 order with a provider charging 2.9% + $0.30, Basic costs $5.20 in total: $3.20 to the provider and $2 to Shopify. The same order through Shopify Payments costs $3.20. That 2-point gap is why most US stores use Shopify Payments, and why the calculator flags what you would save by switching.

PayPal is the exception

PayPal Express offered next to Shopify Payments carries no Shopify transaction fee. You only pay PayPal's own rate, typically 3.49% + $0.49 for standard US checkout. Turn Shopify Payments off and the third-party fee comes back.

Other Shopify fees to know about

  • International and premium cards. US stores pay an extra 1% on cards issued abroad and a higher rate on premium cards such as Amex (3.5% + $0.30 on Basic). In Canada and the UK, Amex and international cards share one higher rate.
  • Currency conversion. When a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify Payments adds 1.5% for US stores and 2% in Canada and the UK.
  • Shop Pay Installments. Buy-now-pay-later orders are charged an Installments fee instead of the card rate, typically around 5.9% + $0.30 and set per store. You are paid in full up front.
  • Chargebacks. $15 per dispute in the US (C$15 in Canada, £10 in the UK), returned if you win.
  • Refunds. Card fees, transaction fees and Installments fees are not returned when you refund an order, so every return costs you the original fee.
  • Apps, themes and domains. Optional, but most stores pay for a few apps, and premium themes are a one-off purchase. Enter them as a monthly figure in the calculator to spread them across your orders.
  • Shipping labels. Shopify Shipping sells discounted carrier labels, so the label is a cost you control rather than a Shopify fee. Enter what you actually pay.

Sales tax is not a Shopify fee. You collect it at checkout and remit it, but because processing is charged on the full amount the customer pays, tax slightly raises your fees.

How to calculate Shopify fees

The calculator follows the same arithmetic you can do by hand:

  1. Amount charged = order subtotal + shipping charged + sales tax.
  2. Payment fee = card rate × amount charged + fixed fee (Shopify Payments), or provider rate × amount charged + provider fixed fee.
  3. Transaction fee (third-party providers only) = plan rate × amount charged.
  4. Plan share = monthly plan price ÷ orders per month.
  5. You receive = subtotal + shipping − payment fee − transaction fee − plan share − shipping label. Profit = that minus product cost, packaging, ad spend and your apps share.

Tax is left out of what you receive because it belongs to the tax authority, but it stays in the fee base.

The new store shows how much the subscription matters early on: on a $35 order Shopify takes $5.22, about 15%, and three quarters of it is the plan. At 60 orders the same plan share drops to $0.65 and fees fall below 5% of the order.

Which Shopify plan is cheapest for you?

A higher plan is cheaper once the money saved on card fees is larger than the extra subscription. Divide the difference in plan prices by the difference in rates to find the monthly sales where they break even:

Monthly sales at which the higher US plan becomes cheaper
SwitchShopify Payments, monthlyShopify Payments, yearlyThird-party, monthly
Basic → Grow$33,000$25,000$6,600
Grow → Advanced$147,000$110,000$73,500
Sales processed online with domestic cards. Grow and Advanced also include staff accounts and reporting that may matter more than the fee difference.

Below those numbers, stay on the smaller plan. Enter your real order count and order size in the calculator and it will tell you when upgrading lowers your fees at your volume.

Shopify fees in Canada and the UK

Shopify prices its plans and Shopify Payments rates in local currency, and the rates differ from the US. Third-party transaction fees are the same everywhere.

A £100 UK order on Basic costs £2.25 in card fees, and a C$100 Canadian order C$3.10. Currency conversion is 2% in both countries. Plan prices are shown before any tax Shopify adds to your bill.

Shopify fees vs marketplace fees

Your own store has the lowest per-order fees, but marketplaces bring the buyers. Here is how Shopify compares with the main US marketplaces:

WalmartReferral fee, mostly 6–15%, no monthly feeWalmart fee calculator

The catch is traffic. A marketplace's commission pays for buyers who are already searching; on Shopify, ads and marketing often cost more per order than the fees. Many sellers use both: a Shopify store for repeat customers and marketplaces for reach. A crosslisting tool like Treecat keeps the same item listed across marketplaces so it gets more chances to sell.

How to lower your Shopify fees

  • Use Shopify Payments. It removes the 0.6–2% third-party transaction fee entirely.
  • Bill yearly once you are committed: it cuts about 25% off Basic, Grow and Advanced.
  • Pick the plan for your volume, not your ambitions. Check the break-even table above or let the calculator compare plans for you.
  • Raise your average order value. Bundles and free-shipping thresholds spread the $0.30 fixed fee and the plan share over a bigger order.
  • Sell in your payout currency where you can, to avoid the 1.5–2% conversion fee.
  • Audit your apps. Unused subscriptions quietly add to every order.
  • Prevent chargebacks with clear product descriptions, tracking and a simple returns policy; each lost dispute costs the sale plus the fee.

FAQ

Shopify fees: frequently asked questions (2026)

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

With Shopify Payments and a domestic card, $3.20 on the Basic plan (2.9% + $0.30), $3.00 on Grow and $2.80 on Advanced. There is no commission on top. Your monthly plan price is extra: on Basic at $39 a month and 100 orders, that adds $0.39 per order.

What percentage does Shopify take per sale?

Shopify charges no sales commission. With Shopify Payments you pay card processing of 2.5–2.9% plus $0.30 per online order in the US, depending on your plan, so roughly 3–3.5% on typical orders. A third-party payment provider adds Shopify’s 0.6–2% transaction fee to your provider’s rate.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees?

Only when you take payments through a third-party provider. Shopify then adds 2% per order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Orders paid through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments or PayPal Express (alongside Shopify Payments) carry no transaction fee.

How much does Shopify cost per month?

In the US, Basic is $39 a month, Grow $105 and Advanced $399 when billed monthly, or $29, $79 and $299 a month when billed yearly (about 25% less). Shopify Plus starts around $2,300 a month on a multi-year term. Apps, a paid theme and a custom domain are extra.

Does Shopify charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. Card processing is a percentage of everything the customer pays, so shipping and tax are included. The third-party transaction fee is also calculated on products minus discounts, plus shipping and tax. Set the tax field in the calculator to see the difference.

Does Shopify charge a fee on PayPal payments?

PayPal charges its own rate (3.49% + $0.49 for standard US checkout). When you also use Shopify Payments, Shopify does not add a transaction fee on PayPal Express orders. Without Shopify Payments active, your plan’s third-party fee applies.

What does Shopify charge for international cards and other currencies?

US stores pay an extra 1% on cards issued abroad (3.9% + $0.30 on Basic) and 3.5% + $0.30 for premium cards like Amex on Basic. If the customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify Payments also charges currency conversion: 1.5% for US stores and 2% in Canada and the UK.

When should I upgrade from Basic to Grow?

With Shopify Payments, Grow costs $66 more per month (monthly billing) and saves 0.2 percentage points per order, so it pays off above about $33,000 of card sales a month, or about $25,000 if you bill yearly. With a third-party provider the 1-point drop in transaction fees makes Grow cheaper above about $6,600 a month.

Does Shopify refund fees when I refund an order?

No. Shopify Payments keeps the original card processing fee when you refund, and third-party transaction fees and Shop Pay Installments fees are not returned either. The refund itself has no extra fee.

How much is a Shopify chargeback fee?

With Shopify Payments, $15 per chargeback in the US, C$15 in Canada and £10 in the UK. If you win the dispute, you get the disputed amount and the fee back.

How much does Shop Pay Installments cost the merchant?

You pay an Installments fee instead of the normal card rate, commonly reported around 5.9% + $0.30 per order, though Shopify sets it per store. The customer can pay over time, but you receive the full amount minus the fee, and the fee is not returned on refunds.

Are Shopify fees different in Canada and the UK?

Yes. In Canada, Basic is C$49 a month (C$37 billed yearly) with 2.8% + C$0.30 online card fees. In the UK, Basic is £25 a month (£19 yearly) with 2% + 25p online. Third-party transaction fees are the same 2%, 1% and 0.6% everywhere. Switch country in the calculator to use local rates.

Is Shopify cheaper than selling on eBay or Etsy?

Per order, usually yes: about 3% plus $0.30 on Shopify against roughly 10% on Etsy and 13.6% plus a per-order fee on eBay. But Shopify adds a monthly plan, and you bring your own traffic, so ad spend often matters more than fees. Many sellers run a Shopify store and list on marketplaces too.
