eBay selling fees

How much does eBay take in 2026?

For most categories on ebay.com, eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale plus a $0.40 per-order fee ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). The total includes the shipping your buyer pays and the sales tax eBay collects, so the real cut is usually 14% to 16% of what you charge for the item and shipping. Listing is free for your first 250 items a month, and there is no separate payment processing fee. Guides that quote 13.25% for most categories, 6.35% for guitars or a separate 2.9% + $0.30 payment fee describe older eBay pricing.

The fee is charged on shipping and sales tax

This is the part that surprises sellers most. eBay calculates the final value fee on the "total amount of the sale": item price, handling, shipping charged to the buyer and sales tax. If you sell a $50 item with $8 shipping to a buyer who pays 8% tax, eBay charges 13.6% on $62.64, not on $50. The tax goes to the state, but the fee on it comes out of your payout. Many online eBay profit calculators leave tax out and understate your fees, which is why this one asks for a tax rate.

The per-order fee

On top of the percentage, every order pays a fixed $0.40, or $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less. It is small on a $100 sale but adds up on cheap items: on an $8 sale it is almost 4% by itself.

eBay final value fees by category (2026)

Your rate depends on the category and on whether you have a Basic or higher eBay Store. Starter Stores pay the standard rates. Rates marked "whole sale" switch the rate for the entire amount once you cross the threshold; the others only apply the lower rate to the part above it.

How to calculate eBay fees

The eBay fee calculator above handles thresholds, Stores and surcharges for you, but the basic calculation is four steps:

  1. Add the item price, the shipping the buyer pays and the sales tax on both: this is the total eBay charges its fee on.
  2. Multiply that total by your category rate (13.6% for most categories without a Store), using the lower tier rate above the threshold.
  3. Add the per-order fee: $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less, $0.40 above $10. Add any ad, international or surcharge fees.
  4. Subtract the eBay fees and your shipping label from item price + shipping to get your payout, then subtract your costs to get your profit.

For a typical sale: fees = (price + shipping) × (1 + tax rate) × 13.6% + $0.40, then payout = price + shipping − fees − label and profit = payout − item cost − other costs.

Working backwards is harder because of the $10 per-order step and the whole-sale thresholds, so the "Price for a target profit" tab searches for the lowest price that reaches your profit after every fee. It works as an eBay earnings calculator too: leave the item cost empty and it shows what lands in your account.

Why “13.6%” turns into 15%

In the first example eBay keeps $8.92, which is 15.4% of the $58 you charged. The difference comes from the tax in the fee base and the per-order fee. The results panel shows this effective rate for every calculation.

eBay Stores, Top Rated Plus and Promoted Listings

Is an eBay Store worth it?

A Basic Store costs $27.95 a month, or $21.95 a month on a yearly plan, and comes with 1,000 free fixed-price listings. In most categories it lowers the rate from 13.6% to 12.7%. That 0.9-point saving covers the yearly subscription once you sell about $2,450 a month (counting shipping and tax). In electronics (9.35%) or computers (7.35%) the gap is much wider, so the break-even comes at a few hundred dollars a month. Keep in mind that the Store table caps the main rate at $2,500 per item instead of $7,500, which helps on expensive items too.

Top Rated Plus: 10% off the percentage

Top Rated Sellers get 10% off the final value fee percentage on listings that offer same or 1-business-day handling and free returns of 30 days or more. That turns 13.6% into 12.24%. The per-order fee stays the same. Free returns are a requirement, so check your listings before you count on the discount.

Promoted Listings

With Promoted Listings General you pick an ad rate between 2% and 100%, and eBay charges it on the full sale total, including shipping and tax. In the US and Canada, the fee is due if any buyer clicked the ad in the 30 days before the item sold while still promoted. Priority and Offsite campaigns charge per click instead; add that spend under other costs in the calculator.

eBay UK fees: private vs business sellers

eBay UK treats private and business sellers very differently, so set the seller type in the calculator before anything else.

Private sellers

UK private sellers pay no final value fee and no regulatory fee on UK sales, except in the vehicles categories. Instead, the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee of £0.10 plus 7% of the item price up to £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,000. On a £50 item that is £2.70, added to the buyer's total; your money is not touched. Selling to a buyer abroad costs 3% of the total, so a £50 item with £8 postage pays £1.74.

Business sellers

Business sellers pay a category final value fee on the total including postage and VAT, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and a per-order fee of £0.30 (£10 or less) or £0.40. eBay shows these excluding VAT and then adds 20% VAT; VAT-registered sellers can usually reclaim it.

eBay Canada fees

ebay.ca uses the same standard final value fee rates as the US, charged in Canadian dollars: 13.6% for most categories, 15.3% for books, movies and music, and 13.25% for trading cards and coins, plus CA$0.30 or CA$0.40 per order. GST, HST and PST count towards the fee base, so an Ontario buyer paying 13% HST raises your fee. A CA$50 item with CA$8 shipping has a CA$65.54 total and pays CA$9.31 in fees.

The differences are in the extras. Insertion fees are CA$0.30 after 250 free listings, a Basic Store costs CA$24.95 a month (CA$19.95 on a yearly plan), and the international fee is 0.4% for buyers in the US and 1% for everywhere else. Like in the US, it does not apply when you ship through eBay International Shipping.

eBay fees vs Mercari, Poshmark, Depop, Etsy and Whatnot

eBay sits in the middle of the pack: cheaper than Poshmark on most sales, dearer than Mercari or Depop for clothing. Run the same item through each calculator to compare:

eBay's advantage is reach: more buyers for collectibles, parts and electronics than any of the others. Plenty of sellers list on eBay and one or two other apps at the same time and keep whichever sale comes first.

How to lower your eBay selling fees

  • Earn Top Rated Plus on your best listings: 1-day handling and free 30-day returns take 10% off the percentage.
  • Pick the right category. Sneakers from $150 pay 8% with no per-order fee, and guitars pay 6.7%.
  • Use eBay International Shipping for overseas buyers to avoid the 1.65% international fee.
  • Check the Store break-even once your monthly sales grow, especially in electronics, where Store rates are far lower.
  • Keep ad rates honest. A 10% ad rate on the tax-inclusive total can nearly double what you pay eBay on a sale.
  • Stay above Below Standard. The surcharge adds 6% to 7% of every sale, more than a Store saves in most categories.
  • Bundle cheap items. One per-order fee on a bundle beats several on tiny sales.

eBay also shows an estimate in the listing form and Seller Hub, but it leaves out your label, item cost and ad spend. This eBay profit calculator includes them, so you can see your real margin before you list.

FAQ

eBay fees: frequently asked questions (2026)

How much does eBay take from a sale?

In most US categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale, including shipping and sales tax, plus $0.30 per order (orders of $10 or less) or $0.40 (over $10). Category rates run from 3% to 15.3%.

How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?

With no shipping or tax, $14.00: 13.6% of $100 plus the $0.40 per-order fee. If the buyer also pays 8% sales tax, the fee base becomes $108 and eBay takes $15.09.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping the buyer pays and the sales tax eBay collects. You never receive the tax, but you pay the fee on it.

What is the eBay per-order fee?

Every order also pays a small flat amount on top of the percentage: $0.30 for orders of $10 or less, $0.40 for anything bigger (£0.30 and £0.40 in the UK). Sneakers that sell for $150 or more in the US and Canada skip it.

Do I pay eBay fees if my item does not sell?

Only insertion fees once you go past your free monthly listings (250 in the US and Canada, 300 in the UK) and any optional upgrades you add. The final value fee is only charged when the item sells.

How do I get the eBay Top Rated discount?

You need Top Rated Seller status, and the listing must offer same or 1-business-day handling with free returns of 30 days or longer. Qualifying listings get 10% off the final value fee percentage, for example 13.6% becomes 12.24%. The per-order fee is not discounted.

What is the eBay international fee?

US sellers pay 1.65% of the total when the buyer is outside the US. Canadian sellers pay 0.4% on sales to the US and 1% elsewhere. In both countries the fee is waived when the item ships through eBay International Shipping.

How are Promoted Listings fees calculated?

For Promoted Listings General you pay your ad rate (2% to 100%) on the total sale, including shipping and tax. In the US and Canada, the fee applies if any buyer clicked your ad in the 30 days before the item sold.

Do UK private sellers pay eBay fees?

Not on UK sales. Private sellers pay no final value fee or regulatory fee, except in the vehicles categories. Buyers pay a Buyer Protection fee instead. Sales to buyers abroad carry a 3% fee.

What fees do eBay UK business sellers pay?

A category final value fee (mostly between 9.9% and 12.9%) on the total including postage, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, a £0.30 or £0.40 per-order fee, and 20% VAT on all of those fees.

Are eBay Canada fees the same as US fees?

The standard final value fee rates are the same, charged in Canadian dollars on the total including GST, HST or PST. Canada differs on insertion fees (CA$0.30), Store prices and the international fee.

Is an eBay Store worth it?

For most categories a Basic Store lowers the rate from 13.6% to 12.7%, so on fees alone it pays off at roughly $2,450 a month in sales. In electronics and computers the Store rates are much lower, so it pays off far sooner.

Is this eBay fee calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and covers eBay US, Canada and the UK. Every calculation is saved in the page link, so you can bookmark or share it.
